The EBTS is honoured and absolutely delighted to welcome to Arne Maynard, one of the foremost garden designers in the world today, as an EBTS Honorary Member.

Arne is an RHS Gold Medallist and a Best in Show-winning designer. He is known, not least, for the strong architectural framework of his designs, in which walls, hedges and topiary always play a key part in dividing the garden into areas for year-round presence and a sense of permanence. This is often counterbalanced with overflowing swathes of gorgeous herbaceous flowers and roses. He is renowned for is his meticulous detailing, for taking close account of the architectural features of the building, for searching out and incorporating the particular garden’s history and that of the place and for sourcing the best traditional local craftsmen.

Arne was brought up in Dorset and says that he spent his childhood gardening in the footsteps of his grandfather and that he is still foremost a gardener. His future path was decided in a flash of realisation when he first looked though the iron gates of Lady Salisbury’s Cranbourne Manor in Dorset, saw the magnificent avenue of beech trees and was ‘bowled over by the beauty and atmosphere’.

A passionate and experimental gardener, Arne now lives in Monmouthshire, South Wales at Allt y bela, a wonderful medieval tower house, where he is in the process of trying out ideas, designing and landscaping the garden there.

His latest book The Gardens of Arne Maynard, published by Merrell Publishers Ltd. 2015, can be purchased from good book shops, online or, for signed copies, obtained via www.arnemaynard.com
