Provisional itinerary

This is a provisional itinerary based on the trip originally planned for 2020 which we hope will not change significantly.

EBTS returns to Scotland after 16 years to some of the finest topiary gardens around Aberdeenshire, Fife and Perthshire, revisiting the famous Palaces with their magnificent parterres and some previously unseen private gardens. The area is rich in formal gardens including Crathes with its fine yew hedges, Earlshall with its topiary chessmen, Drummond Castle Garden’s beautiful parterres and other less known gems, Balkaskie and House of Pitmuies. We shall also visit the recently restored Japanese garden at Cowden. The tour will be led by Charlotte Maclean and is four days staying at Kinnaird Castle, Brechin, the private home of the Duke and Duchess of Fife.

Our days will start and end with hearty breakfasts and relaxed dinners after looking at gardens with special guided tours arranged.  The tour includes half board at Kinnaird Castle, three lunches and all garden visits with guides.

We meet at Edinburgh airport. Transport to and from Scotland is not included. Please see below for train times and flight details. There is a tram, AIRLINK 100, linking Waverley Station to the airport which take about 30 minutes and runs regularly giving time to meet the coach at the airport.

Day 1 Sunday 12 June

We travel to Jupiter Artland for a guided tour and tea before driving onto Kinnaird Castle for a special dinner on our first night.

Day 2 Monday 13 June

We travel north to Aberdeenshire to visit two famous topiary gardens that are now run by the National Trust of Scotland, Pitmedden and Crathes Castle.  These fine examples of ancient yew hedges and exceptional topiary are a treat.  We will stop for lunch in between at The Cowshed restaurant, before returning south to visit the House of Pitmuies for a private visit before returning to Kinnaird Castle for dinner.

Day 3 Tuesday 14 June

This is a day of private garden visits south of Kinnaird near the beautiful St Andrews.  We are lucky to see four gardens including a private visit to Balcaskie with its yew hedges and eighteenth-century parterre on the East Neuk Estate before a special lunch at Earlshall, famous for its striking topiary.  In the afternoon, there will be another private visit to a beautiful garden close to Forfar by kind permission of the owners.  We return for supper to Kinnaird Castle and our final evening together.

Day 4 Wednesday 15 June en route to Edinburgh Airport

After departing Kinnaird Castle, we head to a fine and amusing garden belonging to an EBTS member at Fingask Castle.  We then travel on to see one of Scotland’s finest gardens Drummond Castle with its famous parterre.

After a packed lunch we will continue our tour ending at the Japanese Garden at Cowden.  The garden has been beautifully restored over the last five years by its owner and will for some, be an interesting departure for EBTS to see another side to Topiary.  After a delicious tea we end our tour returning to the airport.
