Britain’s Best Box Woodlands
EBTS UK member, Huw Crompton, partly makes his living by selectively felling boxwood to manage the woodland areas in which it grow. The wood, once dry, is very stable and is ideal for use by craftsman to make musical instruments and tools.
As Huw travels to various parts of the country to select the wood, he is able to see some of Britain’s most beautiful box woodlands, including places we can’t normally see – until now. He is giving us the chance to visit virtually through some short video descriptions of the locations he visits.
His first is Ellesborough Warren, Chequers in the Chilterns which he visited whilst working near by at a local church selectively felling boxwood. The selected trees were felled and then Huw removed the top grade wood for making musical instruments. Matthew Platt and his son took the grade two wood to make tools at Workshop Heaven, Banbury. The tree surgeon removed the rest of the wood.
