Langely no longer the National Collection of Buxus
Over the last 4 years, EBTS member Andrew Napier and his wife Lena have worked hard in their spare time to get the Buxus plants, at Langely Horticulture Ltd, reinstated as a National Collections of Buxus. In conjunction with the owner, Ashley Brunning, EBTS UK and Topbuxus, this was achieved in 2017. However, due to a number of reasons, the required membership of Plant Heritage lapsed, so at a meeting on 3rd September 2019, the Plant Conservation Committee (PCC) formally withdrew the National Collection of Buxus spp. & cvs. of Europe, NW Africa & Asia, held at Langley. This means that sadly, once again, the UK has no official Buxus collection.
EBTS UK would like to thank Andrew and Lena for the many hours of hard work they have put into the project to rejuventate the plants and get the paperwork up to a standard suitable for a national collection. Thanks also go to the generous support received from Topbuxus by providing their HealthMix, Grow and Carpet products free for 3 years.
It is hoped that there might be some good news with regard to a potential future collection in the coming months – we have our fingers crossed. In the meantime we wish Ashley all the best with growing his business and hope that the collection of buxus plants on his property continue to thrive without the care and attention supplied by Andrew & Lena.
Below are the stories we have covered about achiving collection status and enhancing its health.
